A little originality, please?

Dear writer,

So you've decided to re-imagine the movie Newsies as though Jack had a Mary Sue sister who, based on your summary, probably ends up with David. Okay, fine.

But copying the entire movie script and simply forcing in a few lines about your Mary Sue OC? That is not fine. At least have the decency to actually write your own dialogue. ( Read more... )

Ew! That was my immediate reaction.

There is a way to factor in OCs into Newsies fic (not to toot my own horn but I felt like I did an okay job in God Help the Outcasts in that respect). That is not it.

Whoops, I actually meant to post this rant to fanficrants, but I'm glad I accidentally posted it here as well.

And yes, OCs are perfectly fine when done correctly. And to be honest, it's not even the OC that bothers me so much as the fact that she couldn't even be bothered to come up with her own original dialogue.

PS: She includes the songs, writing them out in script form. But she made "Santa Fe" a duet between Jack and her OC! Why?!?!?

Oh that's...that's just painful.

Yeah. Plagiarism > OC every time. I've seen flash sideways fic done well (usually from the POV of a minor character or in this case, maybe conflicting views of the same scene from David and Jack in their heads) but that's just...D:
