Jack is sent to have a series of tests done and Matt calls Alex from the hotel room. He makes any other quick call he needs to make to anyone still in the area. Alex finds Matt pacing in the hallway outside of if Jack’s room. Alex grabs a hold of him”

“Matt, calm down a bit,” Alex tells him calmly.

Matt nods. “Sorry. This is just… When Jack woke up, he told me that he couldn’t feel his arm. The doctor’s took him for tests.”

“Will they be able to find out if it’s permanent or not?” Alex asks.

“I don’t know. But you know just how much Jack loves playing.”

“There was no other option for him. He didn’t get accepted into college like the rest of us. Fuck…”

The two of them go back into the waiting room. Alex takes a seat on one of the couches and matt sits beside him.

“I love him,” Alex says.

Matt looks at him. “What?”

“I love him. I think I always have but I never told him. I wanted to, but then we started to fight and he just got pissed off at me.”

“What did you two fight about?” Matt asks.

“It seems so stupid now. I’ll talk to jack about it. It’s really only between us. But he was right. That’s probably got him so worked up.”

Matt nods. “Alex, when you say you love Jack-“

“As in there isn’t anything that I wouldn’t do for him. My life isn’t complete without him. He’s all that I think about. My world revolves around Jack and making sure he is happy.”

Matt nods. "Do you think he feels the same way about you?”

Alex shrugs. “I hope so. I don’t know. I mean…”

“What if he’s in love with someone else?”

“I’ll fight for him. Matt, have you ever loved someone with your whole being that it hurts whenever you not around them?”

“I have.”

“It really sucks when you see this person every day. Now Jack is hurt and probably still pissed off at me and I think I may have ruined my chance to be with him.”

“Alex, you can’t let this beat you up inside like this. No matter how Jack feels, he is still going to be your best friend.”

Alex nods. Matt knows he shouldn’t be the one comforting Alex right now, but Alex is his friend.

“Alex, there’s something you need you know.”

Alex looks at Matt. “What?”

“When-“

Matt gets cut off by Jack’s doctor coming in the room. Alex jumps up and goes towards him. Matt follows.

“I’m afraid it’s bad news. I’ve already told Mr. Barakat this. The chance of him regaining full use of his arm is about 10%. With physical therapy he can get at least part of it back. Feelings in his hand may never return; that is the main concern.”

“But there is still a chance, right?” Alex asks.

“It’s very unlikely.”

“Can we go in and see him?” Alex asks.

“Yes.”

“Thank you, doctor.”

Alex starts to head in the direction of Jack’s room, but Matt stops him.”

“Alex, there is something I need to talk with Jack first, if you don’t mind. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. After that, I’m going to talk with the doctors about getting him transferred back home to Baltimore.”

Alex nods. “Alright. Just don’t tell him about what I talked to you about.”

“I won’t.”

Matt walks into Jack’s room and sees the younger boy staring out the window. He can tell that he is crying.

“Jack?”

Jack turn to face him and matt watched as he crumbles. Matt races towards him and holds him tightly.

“It’s not fair,” Jack says.

“I know. But you have got to overcome this. I don’t want you to try just because it seems hopeless.”

“It is hopeless.”

“No, it’s not. You’re going to have help with this. We are not going to let you give up. Jack, listen to me. You’re friends and family will not let you give up. It’s going to be hard, and if you don’t ever get full use of your arm back, we will still be with you. We will deal with whatever comes. But right now I want to talk to you about a different matter.”

“What?”

“What I told you earlier, I don’t want an answer to it. You have a best friend that is worried sick about how you feel about him. I think Alex convinced himself that you hate him.”

“I don’t.”

“Talk to him, okay? He really is a wreck, but I doubt he’ll let you know that since what you’re going through is a lot worse.”

Jack nods. “I’ll talk to him. We don’t need two fucked up people in the band.”

“Jack, you’re not fucked up. You’re injured yes, but not fucked up. Now I’m going to send in Alex and then talk to the doctors about getting you home.”

“What are we going to do about the band?” Jack asks.

“We’ll worry about all that when you’re back in Baltimore. You just need to worry about recovering.”

“Thanks, Matt.”

“For what?”

“For being a great friend. You do too much work.”

“It’s not work, trust me.”

Matt gives Jack one last hug and then walks out of the room. He sees Alex leaning against the wall.

“Alex?”

Alex looks up. “How is he?”

“He seems to be doing okay for the most part. He wants to talk to you. Look, after I talk to the doctors, I’m heading home. Everyone needs to talk about what’s going to happen while Jack recovers, discuss the best plan of action.”

"You’re not going to do that without Jack, are you?”

“Of course not, but we had another tour coming up. I need to know if it’s going to be cancelled.”

Alex nods. “Alright. I guess I’ll see you later.”

“Just one more thing, be sure to let Jack just how much you love him, okay? Don’t let him give up on himself.”

Alex nods. He gives matt a quick hug and then enters the room. Matt sighs heavily.

“I hope I’m doing the right thing.”
