Canon Schmanon...

Thank you to everyone who helped in my last post! I now have lots of notes for my exchange story. Your ideas and theories have helped immensely and gave me even more plot ideas to play with. As a result, I think the story will take a slightly different -- but I hope much better -- direction than I'd originally intended. ~smooches my flist ( Read more... )

And wizards having different life-spans certainly helps our ship in being less...uh...pervy.

Oh, yes. The older they get, the less drastic that age difference seems. ;)

:) I mean, forty doesn't seem so bad compared to 80, and an 80 year old still has, what? Another 70 or so years left? You know, makes 40 seem almost like adolescence.

W00T to that, I got an email from "chris" but it was just a jumble of junk, and nothing else has happened.

Good luck on your exchange piece! I'm working (slowly) on mine - somehow the pressure of not being a pinch hitter is... different. Thank goodness we have until November, else I'd be a basket case.

I knew that you received a nonsensical reply, so I was somewhat surprised to get the response I did.

I'm glad we have until November, too. The pressure is different. ~nods~ At least for me, when being a pinch hitter, my goal is to just get the story out. With the extra time, the goal becomes to get the story out and make it good. ;)

Unfortunately she/he has yet to delete my story or my account there. Then I found this in the 'news' section... oh joy.

Offline Viewing
I am going to export the database to flat files, being, each story will be a .txt or .rtf file and zip them all and post a link so you can have offline access to them. Also, Alternatively, you will be able to download the viewer and the whole database itself and run it locally though a runtime =), update your local story archive with files / stories from most major archiving systems. Anyhow, Thats the news, oh and i'm aware of the email server problem and it is being worked on.

It is possible that someone else is handling the content of the website, but if so, she needs another firm. ;)

I say after the fuck up with the secret keeper question at the website, we should only take from there what we chose and reject all the rest of the info.

For instance: Ginevra been Ginny's name. Alright. Septima and Aurora as the names of Vector and Sinistra. Alright. Dumbles age. Unaccepted.

~grin~ I think that's going to be my new motto.

*shakes head* In Trek at least, and other fandoms as well, the rule was only filmed Trek counts--not novelizations, not profic, not interviews. That was even official for the purposes of the profic anthology they had every year for neophyte writers.

Now given that what she says doesn't even make sense with the text...

Problem is the Lexicon will probably take it as gospel--and a lot of archive follow the Lexicon and force fanfic author to conform.

And yeah, I got the same email from "Stephanie"

The HP fandom is still shaking things out. I'm just afraid that JKR will muddy the waters even further when she releases this encyclopedia that she's been talking about.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens there. I expect you're right, though. :(

It would be nice if that archive would go away completely, but apparently that's not going to happen. ~sighs~

Well, if moderated archives didn't have a stranglehold. If people weren't so damn determined to control authors.

The whole point imo of fanfic is the road not travelled--and setting loose of imagination and course correction. To make it tightly conform.

Just so wrong. At least imo. And, of course, unless like me, an author has completely written off ever posting on a moderated archive again, no one's going to complain in public.

I just hope that the Lexicon, and people's tendency to follow it, doesn't put HPfic into a straightjacket.

I see the use of moderated archives. Otherwise, every archive would soon have stories with misspellings and bad grammar/punctuation. However, I also agree that canon should be a springboard rather than a shackle. None of us are writing canon stories. At best, we write stories that would fit into a canon universe, and considering the contradictions in JKR's own canon, even that's an iffy proposition.

And, of course, unless like me, an author has completely written off ever posting on a moderated archive again, no one's going to complain in public.

Actually, I suspect they will complain in public if it becomes a problem. In the past, there have been several discussions that went public regarding moderated archives. (Usually after much private complaining.) Grumbling in public about an archive is considered bad form only up to a point. ;) We all realize that the old saw about "it's their site, their rules" definitely comes into play, but if a problem become too restrictive, people usually speak up.
