I have just registered to use a particular online shop (so as to buy the huge tft screen that will form the basis of our new entertainment system). I've seen that from a number of places, yes it is as stupid as it appears. It does become slightly more secure if they force you to log on and change password immediately, as that cuts down the amount of time in which a successful attack could take place using the information in the email.
