Oh. Oh my god. So amazing, and so heartbreaking in that quiet, understated way that just *gets* me and shreds me. It's this kind of...angry melancholy. This is such a perfect series of snapshots of Danny over the years, and I love the constant tension between real and not-real, happening and not-happening. It's present in his conversations with Flack and Mac, and in the way he tries to avoid them to keep it from *becoming* real (and in his furious insistence that Flack *doesn't* know him), and it's there when Louie is *not* there.
And the scene where he gets his wrist broken, and when it becomes all too possible that he *did* hallucinate Louie's presence? Oh, man. I just...oh, man. You've stolen my coherence.
Also, the whole story evokes the song beautifully (I'm listening to it now). I love it. Thank you so much. *hugs*
(And, you know, you've done a damn good job of talking me down from a couple of cliffs yourself.)
Thank you. I'm so glad you like it. *hugs back* The ideas behind the story came to me while I was listening to the song, but I actually wasn't too sure the resulting story evoked the song. I've been trying to write something about Danny and Louie since RSRD aired, and thanks to your request I've finally managed it.
I do find it somewhat ironic that... well, of everyone I could write for, I'd say I have the most free reign to write totally shameless porn for you, and yet here I am with the first extended gen piece I've written. (granted, it's set during the episode with the manly crying and manly hugging.)
when it becomes all too possible that he *did* hallucinate Louie's presence? I'm so glad that scene worked. I know which possibility I like to think happened, but I wanted both to be believable without the possibilty feeling over the top. Plus, since before I came to the fandom, I've had this background idea of Danny--not in deathly danger but still physically pushed past his limits--flipping out when the nurses/paramedics
( ... )
Oh, it totally did evoke the song, and I think that from now on "Flying Dutchman" is *always* going to make me think of Danny and all of his malleable pasts. And I remember you previously making mention of wanting to write an RSRD-related piece about Danny and Louie, so I'm very glad that this helped to inspire the writing of it.
also? I am absurdly, happily flattered that you feel free reign to write shameless porn for me. And will also note that you did a fab job with this being a gen piece -- while still bringing the happy-making subtext to the table.
And I think that with story elements like the real and the not-real, and the question of whether or not Louie is there with Danny...they seem to work best, in the writing, when we don't over-analyze them. Because I know exactly what you mean; if I'm doing something like that and I become too aware of it, I *am* likely to hamfist it, and it works out much better when I just sort of let these things happen and see where the story wants to go.
Thank you. I typically have a minor freak out whenever I wrie Danny pov, but he's been talking to me an awful lot lately. I'm glad this piece works. :)

Wow.
Um...when I can think more coherently, I'll write better feedback, honest. But this? This is good.

I haven't been able to be objective about my own writing lately, so I really appreciate the comment.

Well, good, we take turns with that too ( ... )

I'm glad you like it. Danny's a damaged and complicated little bastard, but he hasn't shut up to me lately.

It was so purely Danny throughout and so heartbreaking without feeling trite or manipulative.
Just...wow.
