Thank you. I've long been fascinated by Danny's youth, his possible pasts, but I always have minor freakouts when I write Danny pov, so it means a lot to hear that . Because, yes, he is a complex character, and I'm drawn to the co-existence of that very real sort of tough front with this emotionally reactive and ultimately damaged side.
(And thank you again. :) Always happy to have new friends.)
sooooooo sweet! Oh, Big Strong Mac. And I adore that scene where Mac basically tells Don to be sure Danny behaves, and Don gets that bulldog look on his face. As always, you have the voices great. Thanks Tamy
Thank you. I always have a minor freakout about getting the voice right when I write Danny pov. :) And yeah, I was so unspeakably pleased by that scene in "RSRD" because--slashy or not--the basic bond between those three men runs quite deep.
I really enjoyed this introspective look at Danny as a character, the events that make him who he is. I like the edge of darkness, the desperation, the chilling comparison between the way he and Sonny function:
Problem is, Danny knows what that smile feels like from both sides of the line. Sometimes he’ll even practice that smile himself.
Great canon companion piece. And I love the Danny/Flack undertones ;)
Thank you. For a long time I've been intrigued by the possibilities of Danny's youth, and it's a relief to get something finally written and get such a positive response. For months now I've been coming back to the sentence "Sonny smiles like the world is his own private joke," and I can't shake the feeling that, at least for a short time, Danny idolized Louie and Sonny (in slightly different ways).

Y'know it's my first extended gen piece, and what can I say? I don't think I can give up subtext. ;D
There is a reason this man/child still calls his mother mommy. It is trauma. He had few choices for careers in life after his baseball career was out... gangster (which held little appeal to him), or psychologist of some sort (which he ain't got the words for) or CSI (which he can deal with other people's trama just fine, thank you.) T
Yeah, one of the things that draws me to Danny as a character is that, for all his macho and manly front, he has an emotional and essentially damaged/betrayed side, and these two things co-exist. One isn't a lie covering up the other, one doesn't invalidate the other. ...But he is really messed up about some of the things that happened when he was younger, whether he wants to admit it or not.
Oh, I do so love Danny, and I do so love anything that fleshes out his past and his relationship with Louie. The whole thing is just so jagged, Danny pulling away from everyone and yet in the end needing Mac's steadiness, his precense, so much ...
Also? The moment when the reader realizes that it's possible Louie wasn't at the hospital at all? Ouch. And brilliant.

I'm *so* glad that moment worked, because I loved the idea but still wasn't sure about succesfully executing it.
