I'm trying to enter the 21 Century and it won't let me in!

Went to the Comcast Web site this morning to look into finally getting a high-speed internet connection at home. When I navigated to the "Prices" page in Firefox, I would type my information into the text boxes and nothing would happen. When I opened the same page in Safari, I'd enter my information, hit "On You Go" and then the browser would shut ( Read more... )

We ended up with DSL because I got a discount as an employee and because Comcast's basic agreement said they owned the copyright on anything that was transmitted via their system. Including e-mail and artist's submissions to editors. You can imagine how well that went over here. (I've been told that clause has been eliminated, but I'd make sure if I were you.)

Cable modem is faster than DSL except between 4:30 and 8:00 at night. It takes a hit then because cable slows down the more people access and that's when everyone comes home and checks their mail and so on. DSL doesn't take that performance hit but it is inherently slower.

I should also note that this site indulges in one of my worst pet peeves ever: the assumption that all users are already connected via high-speed internet. If you're trying to sell high-speed, shouldn't there be a shopping option for those who connect via dial-up? All those animated sell pages are hell to load via hard line. That's a losing battle I've been fighting almost as long as I've been on the internet. I was involved with a couple of groups developing web sites (for themselves or others), and the guys doing the developing are always the geekiest, with the newest, fastest, best, coolest whatever (computers, connection, software, tools, etc.). They all only want to design their web sites to take advantage of all the nifty things they can do, and I keep arguing (and keep arguing and keep arguing) that doing that limits the viewer/customer base to only the other geeks with the fastest best whatever. I don't unpgrade my computer every year just because some software manufacturer wants more money from me; my system works just great ( ... )
