Spent the morning with markbourne and his E staring at 2,000 year old manuscripts: the Dead Sea Scrolls, to be precise, at Pacific Science Center. I saw them when I was in Israel at the Shrine of the Book, but let me tell you something: for me, this sort of thing never gets old. (Disclosure: To be fair, by the time I saw my tenth ancient temple in Egypt, I ( Read more... )

That exhibit sounds fantastic. One thing I miss about LA (and there ain't much so mark this down) is the quality historical museums. We have one kids museum here and it doesn't quite cut the mustard (although, to be fair, I've never understood why mustard needed to be cut).

Will it still be there 11/11? Want to do that instead of/in addition to lunch? Just a thought, though I haven't run it past M yet. (He wouldn't know from Hebrew...)

They're going to be here until the end of January. Seeing them again that day is a possibility certainly. We should get on the phone and actually make plans at some point. I'll e-mail you my number.

Although the Magna Carta isn't as old as this, I had a similar feeling of awe when I saw it in Portland. The Oregon Historical Society set up a kind of maze of exhibits from the period. As we wound our way inward the light levels dropped a bit every few feet until we finally reached the back corner we came upon an atmosphere protected case with minimal indirect light. There in front of the me was one of the difinitive documents of political science.

I stood there with my mouth open so long the stewards had to usher me along so others could see this great documtent too.

That experience led me to including the formation of the Magna Carta in one of my books. One of my favorite books.
