As has been pointed out, the lowest point in one of those books is when he's discussing a sculpture of a skull: I can't remember if it was crystal or not. Describing the detail work on the inside of the skull, Von Daniken wrote "How could they have known? Roentgen didn't discover the x-ray until 1895!" Yes, how could a society that relied on blunt force trauma weapons in warfare ever have seen the inside of a skull?

His having been busted for embezzlement (of Boy Scout funds? Details blur) is just icing on the cake.
