Apparently I celebrate all holidays the same way: Chinese food and a movie.

In what has become an annual July 4th tradition, ironymaiden picked me up and we met a group of friends at Jumbo's for dim sum. The food was delicious and the group was, as ever, congenial, funny, and full of good feeling. I made a date with some of the folks there for an evening at ( Read more... )

M. was doing contract work yesterday, so I found a discount show of a film that had a hell of a cast but mediocre to poor reviews. Not sure that I'll do a review myself because so few people read 'em when I do. It failed the refrigerator test by a mile and had a weakly written third act, but the acting was first rate and I laughed a few times. Fireworks were mild, so cats were copacetic.

You realize that you just posted a review, right? :-) Except that you failed to name the movie you actually went to see. And what would that have been?

A review would go into WHY the third act collapsed and the film failed the refrigerator test, and possibly why the acting worked or didn't work: that was the equivalent of those strange graphics in some papers where a silhouetted little man waves his hat in the air, or sits with it in his lap, or is asleep and the hat has fallen on the floor. The film was Now You See Me.

I'm still marveling over Helen Mirren's performance. I hadn't done an NTLive screening before this, in part because I didn't know if the format would work for me. I was impressed.

Schrodinger usually freaks out over fireworks; this year I think it was so bloody hot that he just went flop on the floor and didn't care.

(Mind you, it's not like he did anything intelligent like coming into the air-conditioning. But at least he didn't freak out over the fireworks.)
