Paris, day 3: Besotted with Beauty-- Notre Dame and the Louvre

Sep 27, 2012 07:11

The day started early. We got up at 6ish with the sun still set, washed up, had a light breakfast, and headed over to Notre Dame to finally see the interior. Folks, this is the way to site-see: Get up early and beat the crowds. I got to experience what this church is like when it's populated mainly by the clergy and the sparse and scattered ( Read more... )

The Winged Victory has been a favorite of mine since I was a teenager - I'm glad she didn't disappoint in person. Again, I hope someday I'll get there and greet her myself. :->

I agree. Nike of Samothrace was the one piece that overwhelmed me there. Though there was not enough time to appreciate the Louvre in its entiretity when I visited. I suspect, like the Met, you just have to live there to really see it.

Is Whistler's Mother still stuck at the end of the Egyptology section? Talk about odd and inconvenient...

Good! When I was there in the 70's it was still in the Louvre. Glad it has been moved to somewhere that is, ideally, a better venue.

my favorite piece in the Louvre is my icon: an ivory statue of St Catherine with a book and a sword. She was a Doctor of the Church and the sword represents her martyrdom, but I like to think that with a book and a sword she can handle anything.

Winged Victory was a marvel indeed.

I so love these reports, it reminds me so much of our trip in May 2006 (when there were lots of veggies!) as you are seeing and loving many of the things we did. The memories are very sharp and sweet and I love reliving them again with you.

Glad you're enjoying the reports! They're my way of preserving the trip for myself. I find I'm not taking as many pictures as I expected somehow, so they're another way for me to remember things.

The thing that struck me about the Venus de Milo was the realization that there are OTHER ANGLES YOU CAN LOOK AT IT FROM! Every single picture of it seems to be that one angle, and indeed, tourists were crowding into a corner to get pictures from that classic angle, while I was walking around the statue going, "whoa...her hair sticks out in back."
Another nice thing about the Louvre: awesome bookstore. When I was over there, I was actively doing research on the Etruscans for a class (signed up for so that I didn't have to take a quarter off and reapply) and I found a bunch of amazing books there.
