Osirus, before Firefly

“Simon, come on! We’re going to miss the light show!” River tugged her brothers’ sleeve, pulling him from the kiss he was sharing with the blond whose fingers were tangled tightly with his own. “If I miss the solstice…”

“It’s not like there isn’t going to be…Okay, okay,” he laughed, pulling away from Tara and smiling. “Demanding.”

“Come on meimei,” Tara smiled, taking River’s hand and the two girls laughed, running ahead of Simon to the edge of the roof, knowing they could get the best view there. “Si, you’re going to miss the show.” Tara turned back to Simon and smiled. “Bao bay, you promised.”

“We’ve been friends since the sandbox and dating since the summer…since when do I break promises?” He pouted, walking up to them and wrapping his arms around Tara’s waist, resting his head on her shoulder. “Then again I could never say no to you.”

“No more kissing.” River insisted. “I’m going away to school and why is it problematic for me to want to spend time with the two of you. It’s not. Okay.”

Simon laughed, knowing that it was pointless to argue with River, she always won in the end. “It’s not problematic. There will be another solstice, as a matter of fact if memory serves me right there is one around your birthday…” River gave him a look, knowing he was being a smart ass.

Simon closed his eyes and knew well enough to know that he should enjoy this moment; there was something in the air. The solstice always brought change; a beginning and an end. There was something about this winter solstice that made the pit of his stomach ache with dread. Things were going to change and he wasn’t sure if any of it was going to be good.

If only he knew that was the last solstice he’d spend with his too smart sister and the girl he grew up with and was as much a part of him as his own skin… he would have clung onto it even more.
