Title: Five Seconds
Rating: PG-13
Setting: S2
Prompt: Lust

She’d heard it said that it only took a woman within five seconds of meeting someone to determine if she’d ever be willing to have sex with him. Not if she wanted to have sex with him; just if she would rule out the possibility entirely.

Within five seconds you’d decide if someday- maybe after too many drinks, or because you were bored, or because you were two consenting adults and you wanted to, or because you needed someone and he happened to be there, or after a long and beautiful friendship-

If someday, under just the right circumstances, it could happen.

Buffy wasn’t sure how much stock to put in the idea; it was kind of hard to judge the validity of that sort of thing when you were a virgin and it was all hypothetical anyway.

Thinking back on her new age-appropriate male acquaintances in Sunnydale, though, the theory made some sense (although granted, at this point she was just as likely to substitute “dating” for sex).

She’d known from the get-go that the more-charming-when-he-was-his-awkward-self-than-when-he-tried-to-be-suave Xander wasn’t an emphatic “Yes, he could be a potential future partner.” But he also wasn’t a “Not a chance in hell.”

Five seconds into meeting Angel she’d thought he was a creepy stalker, but on a purely physical level, she could see herself wanting him. And of course, now that she knew him…but no, best not to fantasize about that; he hadn’t even shown up at the Bronze when he said he would.

There was one other boy that came to mind when she pondered the five-second theory. Man really. Except not a man.

When he’d clapped for her and she’d turned to see him step out of the shadows, she’d thought he was beautiful. Not handsome- beautiful. With his ivory skin and hair-that-shouldn’t-be-attractive-but-totally-was and intense eyes and that scar and the cheekbones- god the cheekbones-

And for an instant, when she heard the clapping, she felt a jolt of pleasure through her confusion. Because here was a stranger who didn’t scream in fear or call her a freak. He clapped for her. Like she was amazing.

Of course, it took less than five seconds to realize that the clapping was half-mocking and that the reason he didn’t scream in fear was because he was a monster (she should’ve known- human boys just weren’t that pretty).

Still…in those first five seconds (Two seconds? One?)…

Buffy sighed and closed the Cosmo that had inspired her musings in the first place. She didn’t have time for reading. Or daydreaming. She had to plan tomorrow’s Parent Teacher Night.

Besides…

She was going to kill him on Saturday.
