Some happy things (finally)

I bought a new leather coat last night, and not a moment too soon. It is frigid and snowing, and before this purchase, I did not have a coat. I was wearing my Cirque du Soleil hoodie every day. I usually can't find coats which fit my, umm, unique proportions (aka gross, enormous arms), but this one does. I can MOVE in it, and it is fitted and ( Read more... )

I just KNEW somebody was going to ask this. I'm not pushing my vegetarianism on anyone, so I shouldn't have to explain why I wear leather to anyone, especially someone who isn't a vegetarian themselves.

I agree with Jess. She has never said that leather is wrong or anything like that-just that she doesn't eat meat. Those two beliefs are not incompatible and you shouldn't jump on her on that.

I didn't mean to jump down her throat about anything. So I'm SO SORRY for asking a simple fucking question. I didn't think I was being rude or out of line. I see the error in my ways now and I just won't ask questions anymore.

I didn't see the original post, but a similar thought popped into my mind when I first read the entry. The fact that I'm a Vegan gives me some credentials, but I wouldn't have said anything had ~strangeimp13~ not started a thread first: I don't entirely understand your defense "I'm not pushing... ...wear leather to anyone", but also, I never exactly knew the history and/or personal reasoning behind your vegetarianism with which to begin to have that complete understanding.

It's not a defense; I just don't feel I have to justify anything to people when I am not making them justify their own lifestyle choices to me.

I am not entirely against meat-eating. I think the industry needs to be made more humane and environmentally friendly but I'm not going to say that everyone needs to give up meat.

Leather is a byproduct of the meat industry and as long as the industry does exist, not using the skins of the animals killed is wasteful. As far as my own conscience about the matter, I feel like if I eat beef I basically caused the death of a cow, but if I buy a leather coat, I'm just making sure the rest of the cow that was killed for someone's dinner goes to use. I don't believe in killing animals just for their skins.
