to paint or not to paint; and good room-separation curtains

I'm moving into my first "adult" (no roommates, no closet-sized studio) apartment soon! I'm really excited to do things like buy furniture, and I've collected so many prints, paintings, and drawings over the years and will finally have the space and the finances to do them justice in my home ( Read more... )

First rental all of your own? I wouldn't paint for quite some time unless I really hated living with a room's colour or it looked shabby. Concentrate on getting your stuff stored in a way that looks grown up and in control rather than ad hoc, and buying a few good quality pieces of the right style. Maybe buy some new bedding.

good point... with this move comes a return to a different city, new job, new lifestyle really, so I think it maybe just be best to live with it for a while before I paint. :)

I agree with painting the baseboards white and getting a few select pieces of furniture; a nice chair, bed, and love seat. I just moved into a studio in NYC and there's no way a full size couch could fit. But a love seat fit perfectly.

You also may want to consider a folding screen to hide the "kitchen." My kitchen is a little room off the side of my studio without a door, so I hung a curtain from Pier One Imports and it hides the kitchen. That way I don't wake up every morning and see the stove first thing!

Also invent in a nice rug. I have a a rather small Turkish rug about 3' x 5' from Ikea and it really gives just enough warmth to the room. Looking at your space, you could probably buy something a little larger.

It's a great space! Good luck with it.
