The Oedipus complex is concept within Psychoanalytic theory referring to a stage of psychosexual development where a child of either sex regards the father figure as an adversary, and competitor, for the exclusive love of the mother. The name derives from the Greek myth of Oedipus, who unwittingly kills his father, Laius, and marries his mother, Jocasta.

According to my psych classes this tends to be during Freud's third stage of development (phallic) around age 3. How old is Ethan? Not 3 yet is he? I wonder if those are early signs that it will probably happen when he is 3. Maybe around 3 it seems more apparent. Who knows? :) Anyway, here's Wikipedia on the whole thing.
