I believe a major reason people "steal" music is because the music companies are too damn greedy. I firmly believe if the music artists received more money for their music people would be less apt to illegally download music. The reasoning is, "The music company will just keep 97% of net profits, so I am really not stealing from the artist, since ( Read more... )

I actually have always been on the other side of this argument. People forget that artists sign contracts with the labels for a reason- marketing that otherwise couldn't be afforded. If your theory is to download b/c most of the lost profits belong to the record companies, you're neglecting the fact that you're also denying the artist their 3% or so.

You never heard people complaining before downloading technology existed. Anyone who complains now is being greedy. These days you don't have to buy the whole CD. ITunes, Amazon and a whole bevy of other servers let you purchase one song at a time. There's no rational reason for stealing a whole album or even a single song, when you can buy it for $0.99.

I agree with your second paragraph. I was thinking about the state of music sales after I posted this update in my LJ. I am actually surprised that an innovation (downloadable music and MP3 players) gave the consumer more options regarding music consumption, instead of the other way around. Of course the music is still copyrighted, but now it is also write protected as well, which takes away a right the consumer should have: The right to use media as they see fit. I believe that once a user pays for something, they should have access to it for a very long time, and they should be able to use it for any purpose they see fit, as long as it is for non-profit reasons. Of course...this is a huge gray area I can't even get into.

It is nice to hear from you again. Have a great [select one]: Christmas; Ramadan; Kwanzaa; Hanukkah; All of the above. :P
