Some reflection on readers' investment in character. (We already know that writers are invested, even if those characters read flat and bloodless as paper to readers. How to change that?)

Yes, I often find the Seduction of Competence irresistible - for example, Breq, Jani Kilian, the Steerswoman - but especially so when combined with a character's vulnerability and/or wry humour, as with Miles Vorkosigan.
