I haven't watched a South Indian film in quite a while, but I have seen Rajamouli's 2009 film, Magadheera. It's an epic reincarnation tale that's goofy, romantic, larger than life, ridiculous, dazzling--many of the same ingredients that it sounds like Bahubali has. Here's the main song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMwyxM9MZ50

Hindi cinema is trying to hard to follow Hollywood, but I love the the completely different narrative form that still thrives in South India. I'll have to check this one out--Thanks for the recommendation! Janeheiress

I was telling Sherwood I'd looked up Rajamouli's movies and noticed the existence of that one. I will have to see where it's available because we should definitely see it.

His other also involves reincarnation, and looks absolutely hilarious: a guy is murdered, then reincarnated as a vengeful... housefly. (Makkhi/Eega/Eecha/A Fly's Revenge.) Is that the best premise ever, or what?

Yes! I saw that Makkhi is on Netflix, but I haven't watched it yet. Magadheera is on youtube, but not with subtitles. Bummer. It's definitely worth seeking out, though. I like the historical section the best, but the finale has a particularly fabulous moment where a character flies a jeep into a helicopter! J

Oh my, indeed! anonymous May 4 2017, 14:19:00 UTC
I just watched Part 1 last night. Why, Kattappa, why? Hopefully Part 2 will still be in my local theater next week.

Fascinating how the present-day part of the story comes to somewhat of a resolution, but it's the backstory that ends on a cliffhanger. Janeheiress

The structure is very interesting! It jumps back and forth in time. Part two will be the backstory leading up to Kattapa's action, and from there on it's all forward motion, with one of the most awesome scenes with a female hero EVAR. You know who; she is coming back to fill that pit with fire . . .)
