In Australia, Jan 1 has already arrived, and there is a .99 Amazon book sale going on for these indie authors. Here's a chance to discover some Australian genre writers for one buck.

Also, (somewhat) closer to home, that is in time, as least, as one Book View Cafe writer lives in France, the half off sale ends on January first for those of us ( Read more... )

When I was a teenager visiting friends who lived in niftier houses than mine, I always wondered about the bathrooms that had *built-in* heaters--now that I am older I quite see the point. Another luxury, although you need a willing flunky for this one, is running your towel through five minutes or so on the hottest dryer cycle before it gets wrapped around you. And a bath sheet is wonderful for this, the bigger, the better. A warm towel is not quite as good as chocolate, but a close second on a frosty day.

I thought of the towel thing, but the dryer is down in the garage. It would be cold by the time I got it upstairs to my chilly bathroom!

Also, what is a bath sheet?

A bath sheet is an extra large towel, like about 72 by 40 or so, big enough that it almost wraps around you twice. And that's why I said that you had to have a willing flunky--I used to do this for one boy friend of mine, and was only willing because he did it back for me. Not something you can train your pets to do, after all (though I had my fantasies!).

Electric, built right into the wall, taking up about a square foot of wall space. Not sure about the electrical wiring specs. You might be able to find something like it in a catalog for those who restore houses, or maybe even get a salvaged one from an old house. I know at least one person living in my old neighborhood who has one in the old family house, and those houses get renovated/knocked down all the time. That, or maybe Restoration Hardware or even advertised in a magazine for old house freaks (like American Bungalow).

That would cost a fortune. I expect I'll only use this thing twice in ten years, but it is very, very nice to have right now.

It is very small, a ceramic heater made by Lasko. It works! It was around 25 bucks, as I recall. (the last thing we needed at this time of year was another expense hammering us, but I don't regret it.)

Did you have the temps in the mid-30's earlier in the week? How about the winds? It's howling around here like crazy now. So cold it cuts right through you.

I know! Even right now, at three in the afternoon, I keep having to warm my hands in my armpits!

But I sleep so WELL at night when it's in the thirties outside, and about that in here, as I never shut the windows.
