SOunds like one of those situations where there is no right thing, and all you can do is hope to do the least wrong thing. But the other way to look at that is that there is no one thing that is wrongest, so you do the best you can. Sorry you and your dog have to go through this - price of love yada yada, but that doesn't make it easier at the time.
He's been getting them in a was of peanut butter, which is about all he will eat now. (And egg yolk, and ice cream.) This morning he had trouble swallowing the peanut butter, but when I gave him some a few minutes ago, and some water, he got them down okay.
If I had to make such a decision, I think that I'd opt for doing it before I left, so that the poor old dog doesn't spend his last days wondering if you're going to come back.
I've been considering that. At least he isn't "my" dog--he's equally attached to us all. But I've been around the house more, as the others have work/school. (Which is a consideration. Yet I don't want to shorten his life for my convenience. So I go around and around and around.)
