Sirens 2012

Nov 01, 2011 07:06

This wonderful con, focusing on women in fantasy, is moving its venue to the jaw-droppingly beautiful country along the Columbia River next year, here, October 11-14. Previously it was set in Vail, Colorado, a beautiful site, but very hard to get to, and some had problems with being 9,000 feet above sea level. No such problem at the Columbia River ( Read more... )

Love love love the topic (and that the site's nearer a major airport). If the dates work, I'm definitely going.

Looks like airport accessibility is much, MUCH better.

Yeah, I'd looked at Sirens before, and the transport always added a certain level of headache as well as sheer bafflement that a con would pick such a place.

There were a lot of perks for the con committee, but yeah, it was difficult or impossible for too many to make it, lovely site as it was.

Must be something in the air. . .the topic for ICFA 2013 is quite similar, Transformations and Adaptations, but I don't think it will be confined to fantasy.

Apparently easier? Like really. To drive there from the Portland airport, turn left, take the next right, drive for 40 miles along a really beautiful road (most of which goes through a National Scenic Area), and you're there. If they have any sense, they'll have a shuttle bus from the airport too, though I don't see anything about that on the website.

This is worth thinking of in several respects. I'll have to dig out my old BW notes on Pamela Dean's Tam Lin, see if there's a paper in that.

really beautiful*

*straight, not curvy, wide, good highway. And if you really want to, you can take the freeway instead, though I recommend crossing the river first.

In their LJ post, they talk about arranging a shuttle for reduced cost. More will appear about that.

There would be a paper in that--and in fact, there could be a terrific panel on Tam Lin retellings, and I suggest you volunteer if there is such a panel.

And I have family living in Portland, even. I am steepling my fingers at the screen in great interest! I've been wanting to go to Sirens for a few years, but the logistics have been prohibitive -- although, to be fair, more because of the rest of my life than because I'd researched the specific airport issues.

Grab this chance! Sirens is a wonderful con--fun, with a friendly atmosphere, and full of good talk.

I hope to! Everything I've heard about Sirens has strongly indicated that it's just generally composed of pure awesomeness.

It's the con that made me love cons again.

Also, the registration cost includes a T-shirt and several full meals.
