Thanks for the book rec--it's going on my shopping list for the girl. Oh, my gosh, I was so mortified when one of my college professors first year settled down and told my parents his thoughts on why, exactly, he sold so many horses to the parents of 13 year old girls! Really took a little bit of shine off the relationship I'd had with my horse that I'd gotten at... 12!

I had a very unpleasant encounter with the Freudian Theory at the sensitive age of 13 years. Our topic in school was dreams and dreaming and we were all asked to note down one of our dreams. I considered myself lucky because I had this exciting adventure dream in which I had to get out of this castle and flee my persuers on my faithful white horse. So I noted it down and because no other student felt up to reading her dream aloud to the rest of the class, I did. Our teacher coudn't hide a smirk and when I had finished she old everyone, to my embarrassment, about the Freudian theory or about Jung and the archetype "horse" for "male sexuality". Well, I was mortified and from that point onwards felt very cautious about sharing my dreams with other people ( ... )

Completely understand! I do think it quite wrong to embarrass kids by interpreting their dreams, especially using the same symbols to explain everyone's dreams, when symbols will have different meanings for different people.

But then, using Freudian symbolism as reductionism was popular in days gone by.

To me, the way that Freudians reduce absolutely everything to sex says more about Freudians than it does about the rest of the world. You can imagine one of them taking a Rorschach test, 'What does this remind you of?' 'The male sexual organ'. 'And this?' 'Also the male sexual organ'...

The relationship between little girls and horses is partly an inbred urge to care for another creature, but mostly to do with speed, wildness, and pelting about the countryside with no brakes...
