The Hound of Baskerville is the only Sherlock Holmes that I've read, and it really creeped me out (I think I was about eleven). It was mostly due to the setting, though, not the poor dog.
I was about 14 when I first read it. The setting is pretty freaky - and sort of reminded me of the Enid Blyton books I read when I was younger - the whole smugglers and mist and English countryside thing.
