Awww... you're not a moron... besides, there are two hounds - if you look closely between Sherlock & John's head you can see a dog-like silhouette (although it looks a bit like a horse as well...)

My gosh I know! That pisses me me off too. My brother actually asked me when I was making it why Martin's name was 'in front' and I threw a little hissy fit because THEY ARE CO-STARS for one and, like you say, it's artistically correct.
