Seriously. I know not everyone in the US is like this. But on the other hand, the fact that there are quite a few people in the US who think like this just ... angers me/frustrates me/makes me sick/embarrasses me on a global scale ( Read more... )

John Barrowman is GAY?!?!?! Sorry, I was channeling Eva Amurri in "Saved!". How meta. I remember when I first saw this whole thing and I (sarcastically) told my sister, "Well the uproar makes sense because there are no gay men in America...OH WAIT." Also, if a Brit can play Scarlett O'Hara, then a Scotmerican can certainly play Captain America. And now I have images of him in the Captain American costume with a kilt in my head, so I must go lie down until the giggle fits pass.

I watched the clip of JB on comic-con and there are references of him playing Capt. America, but it was so vague that literally I think JB did on purpose in order to test the waters, gauge people's responses. I don't think JB really gives a rat's arse about other people's reactions, him being an advocate for gay rights ( seriously, I HATE THESE LABELS!) but he did it on the standpoint of his acting career and maybe the directors/management 'encouragement' to see audience's reaction on him playing capt. america ( ... )

Correct me if I'm wrong, my comic book knowledge was never that strong on the early super heros, but wasn't Capt. America a character that fought the Nazis? Wasn't he created around WWII? If so, I think it would be incredibly smart to cast an openly gay man as the Captain. What gives a bigger FU to the forces of hatred, greed, and narrow mindedness than a gay super hero! Let's send Bush off with something that makes him feel like he failed utterly to create the Christian-first theocracy he so desperately desired.

I referenced this post in my journal, I hope you don't mind.

The sheer stupidity of the human race boggles my mind sometimes. Factors like sexual orientation should not be an issue when it comes to which roles an actor is suited to play. John Barrowman is incredibly talented, and truthfully, he would probably be better off without the role. He is above such petty stereotypes and he is bound to be successful, regardless.

As far as I'm concerned, the only way to have a real American Capt. America is to have him played by a Native American.

I fail to see how casting a gay person as Capt. America is bad. I mean, it's not like the orientation of his actor means that the character is thus gay-straights have played gays (e.g. Milk), and vice versa.
