Seriously. I know not everyone in the US is like this. But on the other hand, the fact that there are quite a few people in the US who think like this just ... angers me/frustrates me/makes me sick/embarrasses me on a global scale

I read some of your Torchwood fic this weekend. Loved it.
As a comics fan, totally appalled by the reactions you found in response to JB possibly playing Captain America. People can be so ugly. :(
However! From a comics fan and shipper standpoint, I can reassure you that Captain America will provide plenty of slash material (and I'm so looking forward to the movie for the new fandom blood it brings in). Cap and Iron Man are practically canon. (mmmmm John Barrowman, Robert Downey Jr manips... yessss)
Which is to say, people who are upset over Captain America being played by a gay man clearly have never read the comics.
First off, let me say this: "No way! He is g-a-y, so let's not promote that kind of behavior as being "all american".
Cause nothing is more "all american" than promoting homophobic behavior.
That cracked me right the hell up! I love you for this statement alone not to mention all the other wonderful points you put in. Honestly, I think he'd be a great Captain America because of the fact he's openly gay. It would be a huge step up for us, I think, to show that "the symbol for America in the comic world" would be portrayed wonderfully on screen by John. He's iconistic, really. Like when he went on that Canadian version of the There's Something About Maria show (or whatever it's called, I can find the link on youtube if you need) and his whole thing was getting women to be comfortable enough in their sexuality to do a believable love scene, all those women were completely seduced by him and caught up in the moment he kissed them (save for one that nearly strangled him but she was a skittish sort XD) that they all said "Wow...he's...a

Are those guys even listening to what they are saying?

What does being gay have to do with acting?
Barrowman has the physique to play captain. The director chose him, so he has the talent for the role as well.
Let's trust the actors, the director, the editors, and everyone else to do their job and make the best movie possible.
I'm embarrassed and annoyed that only bigots seem to get quoted in the States. We are not all like that. Fact in point: I'm openly bisexual in a conservative state and not once has anyone acted different towards me after me telling them.
I do wish I could say that the people that wrote those idiotic comments about Barrowman came here through a time machine from the 1940's. I really wish I could. *sigh* Mainly, I ignore them, or cut the down if they get too uppity.
I thought he said he wasn't doing it? At Comic-con or something? And frankly, I'm glad. I hate all these lame comic movies, which all tend to fail and just be one lame rip-off after the next. I really hope he doesn't tie his name to that. Although *grins* he can be Captain Planet. Maybe we can work the rest of the Torchwood actors in there as well
