You would think Impel Down would be one of my least favorite arcs, what with all the immature toilet humor. And I thought maybe I would like it less the second time through. Nope - it's still one of my favorites. So hilariously epic. And the comedy is kind of a welcome relief against the deadly serious backdrop.
Vol. 55 is waiting in the wings.

The first time I can remember seeing the chopsticks thing was the party on Merry right after Chopper had joined the crew. Both Usopp and Luffy were running around with them asking Chopper if he wanted to join in, which he immediately did. :D
[Viz translates "devil-may-care," which isn't a terrible translation. "Happy-go-lucky" might be better. It literally translates as "forward-looking," but pretty much means only ever seeing the good in any situation. Buggy puts his finger on the key to both Luffy and Shanks' personality here, I think.]
Hmm, now I wonder if it's also the word Usopp uses in that terrible break-up quarrel in Water 7, when he says something like "Not everyone can go through life always looking forward like you!".

(I also love that Luffy is all "I was sooo disappointed you're not Zoro! But yay, you're alive!" *huggg*)

Oh, wow, good call. I went and looked it up just now, and the words Usopp uses are おめえみたいに前ばっかり向いて生きて行けるわけじゃねえ。So he doesn't actually use the adjective 前向き, but the words he uses are describing almost exactly the same thing (前ばっかり向いて).

I have to admit that there was less toilet humor than I remembered. (I think maybe the anime played it up more, no surprise there.) I just hate it so much that I'm probably oversensitive to it.
I wish Oda would get over his fondness for fart jokes, but no doubt he is in touch with the hearts of his ten-year-old fan base on that point.
Anyhoo - the marine captain that CP9 beat up was Captain Very-Good, whose Devil fruit power actually lets him turn into a bunch of floating spheres (it's sort of like the reverse of Buggy's power, and lets him laugh off blunt impacts). That's why CP9 seem to be holding a bunch of basketballs.
Thank you! I was completely baffled by that.
I dunno, maybe I'm just sore over the fact that there's no Arlong cameo (he's definitely dangerous/infamous enough to be here). Now that you mention it, it is strange that we don't see him. Then again, maybe I'm just as glad because I wouldn't want to see Arlong get ( ... )

Late comment, but I am still trying to figure out whom you mean by this. ^_^ I'm aware of many candidates that have been proposed, but don't associate any of them with vulgar humor. (Now, as for Franky's current opponent, I have to agree.)
I even hate Hachi by association now! D:
Agreed on the loathesomeness of Arlong, later context and all. I don't hate Hachi, but it is good sometimes to reread (relisten to?) Arlong Park and remember when his dumb good-naturedness led him to just shrug off or ignore a lot of the vileness Arlong's crew were responsible for. In a messed-up world, lack of malevolent intentions isn't always enough.

According to Viz's translation, Luffy and I just morphed into the same person: ""Bon Clay!! I was so disappointed because you're not Zolo!!"
I was also sad I had to return volumes 52-53 to the library today, because I feel as if 52 is the last time I get to see the Strawhats together.
And I wish I didn't know the things I know. Although just checking the books out of the library would have spoiled me eventually (by title).
