Pick a character and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them. Any and all characters are welcome (including ones I haven't written but the answers will probably be less than satisfactory :P)

Rose is ALL about emotion. She just wouldn’t be Rose if she didn’t feel empathy for a Dalek, or cry her eyes out over the thought of the Doctor being alone, or make him take her back to 1989 so that she could get some catharsis relating to her dads death. She is so much like the Doctor in the way that she cares. About everything and everyone, no matter who or what or how scary they may be.
It’s also the best and worst thing about her personality, depending on the situation. Which is important to remember when she loses her cool, especially around the Doctor and her mum. If Rose is ever anything, it will be emotional.
4. Determination and Joy; Faith, Hope and LoveAll of the Doctor’s new companions have had a certain amount of stoicism to them but I love how fiercely determined and endlessly positive Rose can be. She always tries to see the good in people, even if the world is going to shit around her and really, we only ever see her down a handful of times on the show. Even then she’s always quick to bounce back - it’s ( ... )

Rose has very particular body language and she always wears her heart on her sleeve. When she’s sad she crunches up in a little ball and sobs her heart out. When she’s hopeful or excited she bends her knees, paces about and clenches her fists like she just can’t contain herself, she has to let something out or she’ll explode. When she’s happy she sort of hop-skips instead of walking. She likes cuddling and leaning into people as she walks. When she’s pissed she stands up straighter and taller and her eyes go wide and she yells like anything and throws her hands about to help illustrate her point. Then there’s the tongue smile (yeah you know the one). The way she always seems to unconsciously mirror the Doctors body language. All things that are important to remember when writing Rose.
...I have obviously spent too much time writing Rose fic lol.

Rule # 2 There are elements of Ten that must peek through from time to time. In the way he speaks and the words he chooses, his quiet aversion to guns, his need to be in close physical proximity to Rose...it’s getting the balance right between the two characters so that he seems like a totally different man - until he suddenly lapses into a Doctorish babble and you have to do a double take and go “whoa...was that John or Ten?!”
Rule # 3 John can read Rose’s emotions as easily as a book and he will not pretend that he isn’t ( ... )

2. He can be lanky and awkward but always always ALWAYS energetic, energised and BOUNCING. He is also a tactile creature when happy but very stand offish and isolates himself physically when upset/angry. If you can't characterise him by his voice, then you neeeed to get his body language right.
3. He is irrevocably and totally in love with one Rose Marion Tyle, no matter what anyone says. Trufax. He loves being with her and is terrified of losing her and they generally have an absolutely bloody ball together even when the world is falling to shit around them. <3 ( ... )
