Pick a character and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them. Any and all characters are welcome (including ones I haven't written but the answers will probably be less than satisfactory :P)

1. Inner voice/stream of consciousness
Her voice is going to make up two of my points because for me it is such an important part of writing Rose.

The trick with her inner voice is to write it in a way that is reminiscent of her spoken voice without becoming too simplistic because Rose does often revert to simple layman’s terms to try and describe/explain things when she speaks. One thing that turns me right off is a Rose POV story where her train of thought reads like a Jane Austen novel because to me...that's just not Rose. She might have deep thinky thoughts but they'd manifest themselves in a significantly simpler than say, the Doctors, whose brain is always going at a million miles an hour and can be full on with twelve syllable words and complex metaphors galore. I try and make the language and style in Rose’s internal and external voice as similar as possible with maybe a slightly more formal bent to her internal thoughts. The danger with Rose is in making her inner voice sound too simplistic because it can make her appear stupid which she very obviously isn’t. Not well educated maybe but definitely never, ever, stupid. Except for maybe emotionally but I’ll get to that later.

2 Spoken voice
Rose is a high school drop-out from a bad part of London. It seems silly but so many people seem to lose that when they write her dialogue - which is understandable. Epecially with non-Brits who struggle with the accent and slang as is. I always strive in my writing to make her voice read on paper like an approximation of how she sounded on the show. I read a lot of my Rose dialogue out loud (in my terrible Rose/South London accent lol) and try to see where I think she would pause and what words don't fit her vocab quite right.

That said, I also love having her trying out new words and the Doctor helping her out/correcting her pronunciation - something that we saw several times on the show. She might have dropped out of school but the girl is ALWAYS trying to learn. Which I love about her. And I love exploring that side of her in fic.
