The Ferengi are mostly my fly in the ointment to enjoying DS9 fully.
It's been a long time since I was bathed in the Trek (via my mother's influence) so it's hard for me to say, but I seem to remember DS9 being more willing to delve into world-building and consequences than the rest of the ST universe.
Did you see the episode, early DS9, where they make first contact with some alien species from the Gamma quadrant and they start off by, essentially, playing holodeck D&D? That was awesomely lame.
We had a discussion about Wallace Shawn in the green room over last weekend's performances.
One side of the discussion maintained that Wallace Shawn had no sense of humor.
The other side said pshaw, he does so, otherwise he wouldn't have played Vizzini in The Princess Bride.
The first side said that they'd heard he'd played that part straight, and didn't know comedy at all.
Well he also played a Tyrannosaurus Rex, said the other side. And besides, the other side had read William Goldman's accounts of the filming of his novel, and while William Goldman spends a great deal of time talking about how wonderful a guy Andre the Giant was, he somehow neglected to mention any hint of Shawn playing the role straight or, indeed, not having any kind of humor whatsoever.
The first side said they saw My Dinner With Andre and they didn't see a single thing funny about it.
The other side mentioned Shawn has more of a dry wit, a very very very dry wit, which is to be expected when one is the son of a New Yorker editor
