I think maybe there is a word for a kind of sandal that is similar to the word for low-class harlot, and it works by separating the big toe from the other toes? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabi

I don't know any Japanese so I'm not sure whether this works or not.

I suppose there's that; what I was sort of thinking was that there was a word like 'cleft' which had been used as slang for a harlot, and also which would describe a delineation between toes. However, I have no real basis for this.

Yeah, I would guess there is a word for the toe part of the sock that has no translation, or, as you say, the cleft, or the seam of the sock. The whore of the sock, if you will.

Well, if the piece of the sandal between the toes is called a thong (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandal_(footwear)) and there may be some association with that word and "lower class" but that's still a stretch to me. You might write back and ask them to say it in Japanese.
