“Do you remember when we were friends? After work we used to come up here, have a drink, watch the sunset.”
“We were never friends, Sterling.”
“So the answer to my question would be ‘no’.”
If Sterling had been anyone else, the words would probably have pained him to hear. He wasn’t anyone else though, he was Jim Fuckin’ Sterling, head of security for IYS and, if you paid attention to the rumor mill, a real hard ass. He was egotistical and self-serving, but hey, he was okay with that.
Still, as much as it didn’t upset him for Nate to acknowledge that they used to be friends - and they weren’t, not really, you simply didn’t do the kind of things they’d done with someone you were just ‘friends’ with - the total dismissal that Nate had given him stung.
Maybe Nate could deny them being friends, Sterling could see that. But for Nate to look at him like he was just another object in his path? Well, Nate may be an unstoppable force, but Sterling was an immovable object. Nate couldn’t just write Sterling off because Sterling refused to let him. He wasn’t some petty villain in the Sherwood Forest of Nate’s life.
No, they were going to sort this out like they always did: with a bottle of scotch, a few punches, sloppy kissing, desperate groping and a bed (or if there wasn’t a bed, a couch could work - a desk even, would be suitable). Given, it had been a few months, but Sterling was pretty sure he could easily remind Nate how their differences in opinion used to transpire.
And Nate had a lot coming to him if he thought Sophie’s presence was going to stop Sterling from trying.
