The other day, I got back to work from lunch and stepped out of my car. A distinctive smell hung in the air. It took a few seconds to place it, but when I did, it was unmistakable. Hot brass and burned gunpowder. The smell lingered for awhile. There were no cops around, no chaos which would indicate a spree shooter or a drive by. The campus was quiet. I had an idea of what it meant.

When I told my wife about it, her first thoughts were "Sounds like your grandpa." He died a few years ago, and was someone we all associated with that smell, being an avid shooter and all.

She posted something about it on Facebook and immediately, one of my cousins, and his mother (my granpa's daughter) said the same thing.

It was a better feeling than the scent of freshly dug earth we smelled last week for no reason whatsoever. I creeped out the wife by saying it was a "grave dirt" smell. I came and went like something was just passing through.

The change in seasons is just right for this sort of thing, I'm tellin' ya.
