The Dog in the Night Time

So it actually got a little weirder.

I didn't think it could be the dog walking around, because it had the heft of a man with a man's weight, not a dog with a clatter of nails. But when I finally got up to check the house I looked for him where he usually sleeps and there he was - which should be reassuring, because if it was some corporal guy who'd decided to take a stroll through the house he'd be barking.

But there was a strange stillness about him, and when I patted him he didn't move.  His eyes were glazed open, and his body felt stiff and limp at the same time. Something you recognize if you've had enough pets long enough.

So at this point I'm thinking I can't bear this, not again this year and I shook him gently, and his bones just shifted under his coat and his eyes stayed open.  This seemed to go on a long time and just when I really started to panic he blinked and gave me a look like what do you think you're about, woman?

It was embarrassing enough that I didn't bring up the footsteps and went back to bed.
