Love/Hate: A DISCUSSION

The loves and peeves of the best show ever since ST:TNG and X-Files Stargate Atlantis.

It has been quite a while since I have obsessed with a show as I have with SGA. There was StarTrek: The Next Gen as the first. I loved it so much, for a punishment my mom wouldn't ground ground me, she just wouldn't let me watch the show. (actual tears in protest ( Read more... )

Love: the fact that they're willing to play with the genre, and do it well. Space vampires, the requisite hot alien babe, "Kirk," mutating into a bug, time travel, two people stuck in one body, being trapped in virtual reality, all-powerful superweapons... every campy scifi cliche ever, but they make it fun to watch.

Hate: Kavanaugh's treatment in Critical Mass. Testing the retrovirus Michael. The situational ethics and moral ambiguity- I'm too brainfried to articulate it right now, but there's been stuff that creeps me out.

Yes the whole ethics thing has been a big part of the show. However, it was something that had to be adressed, and I think in someparts they handled it well, and others I believe the put a little too much humor in it. It is a sensitive topic that makes many people uncomforable. It makes people think, "what would I do in this situation, would I be able to do that? Even if it ment I would die? if others would die?"

How far is too far? Does the end justify the means?

So, as an emergency medical professional, does Carson strike as the person most likely to appropriately treat someone who may have been sexually assaulted off-world, or does he seem more likely to respond to uncharacteristic "don't fucking touch me" behavior with, say, restraints?

Carson strikes me as a very carring doctor with a core of steel. I think he would handle the situation with the dignity and gentleness required, but wouldn't take any guff from the patient.

That really irks me in some of the fics I have read, letting the patient, be it Rodney (most of the time) dictate his treatment, by letting them release them against doctors wished. I don't think he would reach for the restraints, more thank likely meds, Atavan, Prozac, and isolated room and forced councilling.

Heeh!

Love: RODNEY. But, then again, practically everyone does because he is a super character. He's not perfect, and he can make mistakes, but he's smart, witty and lovable. I also love the character interactions between him and Sheppard, they're just adorable together (either in a slash or non-slash sense, both make sense, I suppose). I love the secondary characters (eg, Grodin, Lorne...). I really, really love the fanbase almost as much as the show because SERIOUSLY, the fans for this show just rock. We get all the good stuff here. I love the plots, the little intricacies (I'm sorry about spelling on that word...my brain is fried...) and just the things that make me squeal or laugh out loud.
Hates: somewhat touchy moral/ethical issues in the show (yeah, critical mass, michael), and the fact that the female characters are not as well rounded as the males. Although, it is really hard for me to find a femlae character that I like on TV. Um. What else? I don't hate a lot about this show, I must tell you.
