It was a really good thing that Vexen didn't have his heart research set out for just anyone to see. Experience with marauding Neophytes who were more likely to destroy his experiments than assist with them had taught him that much. The caution of doing work with a heart that might draw attention contributed as well. There was, however, sensitive material there, and the presence of another being hanging around his space immediately drew his hackles up.

The Chilly Academic glanced towards the door. Seeing the peering eyes, he turned, suppressing the urge to summon his shield, but blocking the view of his notes on the counter behind him all the same.

"Something you're looking for?" he asked blandly, trying to assess the situation. The person seemed familiar...probably one of the ones he had spoken to on the NETWORK at some point.

Hm, busted. How unfortunate; he assumed most humans would be out and about celebrating the holiday... though, now that he thought about it, this person did not feel quite human. The alteration in his reiatsu was small, small enough that he could not have picked it apart from the massive throng of humanity if he hadn't known what to look for, but quite noticeable now that he was close. Szayel reached up, adjusting his glasses with a bored noise.

"Forgive me. I was trying to ascertain the aptitude of the individual that owned this lab," he replied. "If I may assume, I was not expecting said individual to be here."

"Said individual has nowhere else to be, and has work to do," Vexen commented, a little defensive about his own presence already. "Besides, there is no way to determine aptitude without seeing work. My notes stay with me. There would have been nothing to see if I had not been here," he added.

Szayel smirked, waving a hand carelessly as he entered the laboratory, glancing around with approval.

"Hm... on the contrary, it proves you are worthy of my attention instead of just being some pathetic play at a scientist," he replied.
