I really liked this as well! I love the exchange between Sanzo and Hakkai - there's so much understanding and searching in their few words, very understated and yet powerful.

Also, I LOVE this:

Thank you! I do think Hakkai and Sanzo tend to understand each other in a pretty potent way ... they're quite similar, but just different enough to each be able to prod the other into not indulging his psychoses too far :p That's how I think of it anyway.
Hakkai just sort of elbowed his way in... I was nervous about writing him (I haven't before; I find him kind of daunting) but it seems to have worked. I'm relieved ^___^;

And yes: it is, in fact, all about one-upping Hazel. XP The translations in konnyakuhonyaku have been having an influence...
