Edinburgh (2d) St. Andrews (1d) Inverness and Loch Ness (2d): Inverness makes a great base for exploring the region, and you can fan out in almost any direction for interesting day trips: east to Moray and the distilleries near Forres, south to Loch Ness, and southeast to the Cairngorms. You can even head north to the Northern Highlands. Nairn is home to Cawdor Castle, where Macbeth laid his head. Dating to the 14th century, it's still inhabited today.
Isle of Skye (2d) Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most beautiful in Scotland, thanks to its dramatic location on an islet. The structure is all wood and stone; take time and go inside. Hardened lava flow along the Trotternish Peninsula created a curious pinnacle called Old Man of Storr. Don't miss nearby Kilt Rock, shaped like (you guessed it) a kilt. Farther north, the Quiraing offers more unusual formations. Take a drive in Glen Brittle to see the steep Cuillin Mountains. Dunvegan Castle, 22 mi/25 km west of Portree, was the seat of Clan Macleod.
