The job has decided to take me on permanently. \o/ Today I learned how to sign up for benefits and got my cheapie local bus pass. They pay for part of a yearly bus pass, which costs me about a third of what it would usually cost, and comes out of my paychecks so I barely feel it. (Although, Greyhound gave me a FREE yearly bus pass. For DART *and* ( Read more... )

Hey, that's awesome! And the insurance thing--that's what's happen to health insurance in the last few years. It sucks shit, unless maybe you work for a government entity or a ginormous company. I pay close to $200/month for the more expensive plan from my employer so that, while I still have a deductible, it doesn't apply to regular office visits. Otherwise, I'd be paying a little less but paying full cost for any office visits unless I hit $2000 which I probably wouldn't. If your employer offers a FSA you might consider going for that because however much you choose comes out of your paycheck pre-tax and it's ALL available immediately to use to pay for prescriptions, copays, deductibles, whatever.

For family coverage, my boss pays like $700/month for the CHEAPER plan. WTF?

Jesus, health insurance has really gone to hell, hasn't it? Does your boss make a lot of money to be able to pay that much?

The HR lady was trying to make it sound like this system was better because it was "consumer driven." I just feel like I'm getting screwed because I get sick and visit the doctor a lot. Now I will likely skip the doctor more because I can't afford it. :P

No, my boss doesn't make much more than I do. The majority of her salary goes to health insurance, FSA, and paying a 401K loan. Her husband is supposed to make the big bucks, but recently he hasn't so they've been screwed.

And yeah, they try to sell all the bad changes as something good. Or else, "If we don't do this then we probably won't be able to offer insurance so just be grateful." Up until a few years ago we had no deductible on office visits or anything like that, no prescription deductible, now it just sucks. I pay for the more expensive plan because it's not that much worse for one person and I found that I really resented the fact that I worked and paid for insurance but still put off going to the doctor because it was too expensive. :\

I haven't really read up on Obama's plan for health insurance, what everyone keeps calling "Obamacare," but I'm starting to wonder if it wouldn't be better than what we're heading for. Couldn't be much worse than this!
