More job angst. So, I accepted that six month contract earlier in the month, but no paperwork to bind me to that has been signed as of yet. What preliminary paperwork I've gotten indicates I will be an employee-at-will with the ability to walk away at any time. I'm scheduled to start next Monday and there will be more paperwork to sign then. ( Read more... )

Take the at-will job, and don't say jack about the other one to anyone. It isn't a sure thing, no matter how good it looks, and you'd be silly not to take the bird in the hand. But if they give you a contract, take it, smile, and stall. Don't sign it until you hear from the other job. If you get it, great, you're free to take it; if you don't, you have the six-months thing.

My sister told me once, when I was juggling jobs and feeling guilty, "You don't owe them anything except to do your job well. They didn't hire you because they were doing you a favor, and they'd fire you with no guilt if they thought it was best for them."

That is a very, very good point. There will be no ruth in me.
