Most of these are starting to point towards risk it. The not knowing could be worse, the lost history, as my mother is always saying to me about my grandmother, more so. Hell, do it for the health implications.

Ponder the risk of pain with a possibility of at least a little happiness versus a lifetime of simply never moving beyond 'what if?".

Health implications? Feck. I'm a 43 year old smoker. Finding out my great grandmother might have had parkinson's in her 96th year isn't a motivating factor in all of this...

My questions for you are these:

What is really prompting this? Is it merely curiosity? Is it a sense of your own mortality? Are you lacking something in your life that you think this might fill?

I will be honest with you. When my bio-father really started to make noise about wanting to see me was when my grandmother was obviously dying. He had an intense feeling of his own mortality. Once he was satisfied that a piece of him was going to live on, he dropped me as quickly as if he'd never been there. It hurt. A LOT.

Really REALLY think about what you're truly wanting to do this for and what it's going to do emotionally to all involved. Please.

Not exactly the same situation, but tracking down my bio-mom did me a world of good. Let me know if you want to grab a beer and talk about it.

Hopefully, if I can make it a few more days without the cracks in the sky spreading and bringing it down completely haha.

Okay, that was uncharacteristically melodramatic... if nothing else goes wrong for the next few days in a way that requires further sacrifices of my immediate time, is what I meant :D

Heh. I hear you. This weekend is pretty busy for me, too. I'm not in any particular rush; I've been putting this particular project off for 15 years or more. Another week will not kill me...

This is not in any way relevant to the discussion, but I thought it might give you a brief smile...

Thank you! That is a chuckle. I find it interesting that Canadians have a reputation for being so easy going. We even see ourselves that way. (Our history, however, is something else entirely, and something that we seem to collectively forget as a nation....)

And so, if you were to list some 'typical' Canadian attributes...what would they be?

Me? heh. I don't know. I'm about as anti-stereotype as it's possible to be. (Seriously--Bruce laughed at me once because I totally failed to notice that someone was obviously black.) I guess all the stereotypes i know are by comparison to Staters; harder working, more friendly, more easy-going. Mostly though, that's because the Stater stereotype says we are high-strung, impatient, lazy, and self-entitled.
