Emily Starr revisited...

Jul 31, 2009 13:56

This Friday posting is becoming a routine. Well, I could do worse.

Not quite so productive this week, as I've been using my free minutes pleasure-reading, getting through L.M.Montgomery's Emily trilogy for the millionth time. It's been a while since I've read it, my set having been on loan for a year or two.

I like the Emily series better than Anne, ( Read more... )

Have you ever read the "Days of Dreams and Laughter" collection? It has two books that I love (although I have to admit I'm not familiar with the series you're discussing, and I could only make it a couple of books into Anne), the Story Girl books. I have been slowly rereading them and treasuring every page whenever I stay over at my mother's house, where my copy of the book is. Several stories I have spent the past ten years trying to place are among the little stories the Story Girl tells.

I've not read those; they're on my wishlist but are hard to find in the usual places, being less in demand.

I don't know how you feel about reading books online, but I'm pretty sure you can find E-Texts of The Story Girl and The Golden Road at Gutenberg.org, if you're desperate!

I'm not familiar with this series, but my guess on the pronounciation would be ILL-suh (based on three years of high school and three semesters of college German).

I loved Sara Crewe! As written, not played by Shirley Temple.

And--you have time for pleasure reading?!? I'm doing mine at 2AM and passing out mid-page!

I love A Little Princess, the book, and I'm also fond of the 1995 film starring Liesel Matthews, even though it completely misses the point. The Shirley Temple one is just saccharine and lame.

Oh, I missed the 1995 version.

A Little Princess is one of two books I read around the same time. The other is the Esther one I told you about, that I hoped One Night with the King was based on (it wasn't). I can't remember the title and I think it's out of print, grr! I have vivid memories of pulling those books from the library shelves, in sections not much frequented by my comtemporaries.

zomg we must have a movie date.

Princess actually helped get me through some rough patches in childhood. There was one summer I really did live in the attic, lol.

Never read the books, so no comments there. However, I can confirm that Ilse is pronounced Ill-zuh. That's the name of the Avon lady my mom has bought stuff from for most of my life.

I concur with the pronounced E in Ilse, though if I was using that name as an author I would spell it "Ilsa" to minimize uncertainty among readers who haven't been as exposed to German as I have been.
