I wouldn't go as far as to say that this episode was bad. Boring, definitely. Save for the revelatory Winchester Family Dynamics-scenes.
Not a picspam.

Thoughts and Shtuff
I dont't know whose decision it was, but they were rather heavy-handed with the whole 'sympathetic younger version of a main character', weren't they? On one hand, I appreciate this insight into what a younger Sam might have been like, what he might have gone through. On the other...
The dates:
Just like in the Pilot/Wendigo (1x01/1x02), I get miffed at the people behind Supernatural for not being diligent. March 20th, 2006 was not Friday. Just like November 2nd, 2005 was not Monday. *grumbles*
I wonder how much this episode could be thought of as the Ultimate Sam Analogy...
A boy and his father, estranged, trapped in a cheesy horror flick, the blonde, beautiful mother hovering in the background, but never really a part of the action. And then they lived happily ever after?
The estrangement is easy to see, and the end? The Ultimate Wish-Fulfillment for Sam. He hopes that John would accept him the way he is, treat him as an adult, an equal. He even says it straight to Dean's face: "But no matter what I did, it was never good enough. - when we do finally find Dad, I don't know if he's even gonna wanna see me."
But if this is (One of) Sam's Dream Come True... where's Dean? Part of Joanie, staying out of the conflict between her husband and son?
No, this episode did not help with the distinct discomfort I still feel around spiders. And tarantulas? I'm happier than a duck in water that not a single species of those is native to Finland. (And yet I went and googled them to find out the species... hopeless masochist, that's me. *rolls eyes*)
