Hot Man on Man Shakespeare

I posted my review of last night's Romeo and Juliet over at Two Hours Traffic hereabouts. I will NEVER FORGIVE the director for callously squandering a thrust stage, nor can I forgive him for rambling on in interviews about how cool it is that Juliet has all these supposedly masculine qualities while Romeo has the feminine ones and then making a ( Read more... )

Absolutely stunning. I've never heard of this staging! I wish I could've seen experienced it too.

It really was brilliant. Just... you think you know that play inside-out, but with just a few twists and devices, you suddenly realise that it's an AMAZING play, incredibly vibrant and violent and genuinely passionate.

*is a geek*

Oh Shakespeare. I guess you really knew what you were doing, huh? ;)

*sigh* Now I want to see this play. I can picture it, in what you've written here.

You know, Romeo and Juliet is actually one of my favorite plays, because it's got all this potential to be incandescent, but even though I've probably seen it more than any other Shakespeare play, I have yet to see one that really works--that doesn't try to make the lovers ironic, or is able to create the right atmosphere, or whatever. Ah well, we live in hope.

I found a copy of the play from the Dramatists Play Service publishers- it's excellent reading, as it's not just a cut of the play, but a (hate to use this term) reimagining, in a sense. Plus, they describe a lot of the stage directions, so you hear all about how they use the fabric and such.

Plus, boykissing! What's not to love? ;)

It was amaaaaaaazing. I was so over Romeo and Juliet in that absurd, cynical way, when I saw a flyer for the show and perked up at the all-male aspect (I'm so easy). I went that night and it just rocked my socks off- it got me excited about the play in a way I'd never felt before, and was also so very much it's own thing.

Oh man, I LOVED R&J, everything about it, everything you said. The moment that still really stands out for me was when Capulet was yelling at Juliet that she would marry Paris and practically raped her in the process, and the boys had gotten so caught up in the text that they forgot what they were doing and then there was this horrified moment when they realized. It was like a gut-punch, gah. So good.

I was at the Globe the season Matt Sincell was there, and everytime I passed him in the hall or something I did a little fangirl "there's Romeo!" in my head, so I totally get you there.

God, yes! That and the wedding scene- when they're so brutal and then it turns into Sonnet 116. I just love the way they play around with the levels of their characters, how the students' feelings feed right into the characters, for good or ill.

Hee! He was such a sweetheart, too- he sat and talked with me about Giles and Mark and the Globe and all sorts of random stuff, all while nursing a hot tea because he was nervous about his overworked voice. When I'd first met him, I'd just gone up to him after the show to fangirl him for R&J- turned out this was SUCH a good move because his parents and sister were there and were THRILLED with the proof that their son had a FAN who'd seen him in LONDON. ;)

This does look rather AMAZING. In every way.

But is it wrong that it gave me an idea for a fic? Yes? *hangs head in shame* I'm uncontrollable. Shoot me.

My muse is an evil monster that requires stopping a figure of awe and glory and divine inspiration. Where's SamnDean when you need 'em? (answer: on my telly tomorrow night!!!)
