The Atomic Fursuiter

May 05, 2011 20:56

Last year I made a post about Project Gnome. I was amazed to learn that New Mexico has had 3 atomic blasts on its soil (or under it). Everyone knows about the world's first atomic blast at the Trinity Site, but very few people know about the other nuke tests that took place around the country outside of the Nevada Test Site. Did you know that they detonated a couple of nukes in Mississippi?

In my never ending quest to fursuit in the most bizarre places, I actually suited at ground zero at the Trinity Site in 2005. The post and pics can be found here. Since I was going to be in Carlsbad as Otto and we had some time to kill this afternoon, we made the pilgrimage to ground zero for the Gnome Shot. So I am now the only fursuiter to have visited TWO nuclear blast sites! If I get motivated I will visit the other New Mexico site sometime this summer. Pics or it didn't happen? OK! Here ya go!

If you want to know more about the test, here is a fascinating video about the event. It's 29 minutes long, so grab some popcorn and enjoy. To me it was utterly fascinating because today there is NOTHING left at the site. It's just desolate NM desert with pumpjacks in the distance and cows wandering around.
