Posting questions

Mar 10, 2011 10:03

I'm almost finished my cowboy fic, but I have a question.  I know you guys know how to do this but I can't figure it out.  I want to have my whole story - all eight chapters on one post with cuts to each chapter.  You know labeled chapter one, chapter two.  What I usually do is make a link
like this: clicking on Rich Text's little world linky icon ( Read more... )

help, writing, peeps

Dang - I have a cheat sheet all ready on my desktop at home, but I won't be home for another 8 days. (Unless maybe I have it as an attachment to an email I sent out to an LJ-newbie last year, that I might have saved in an email folder?)

If you don't get another volunteer, let me know and I'll rummage through my email folders.

I'm so glad to see you're almost ready to take the big step!

It is exciting to think about finally posting the whole damn thing. It would also be cool if I knew how to put some kind of cowboy banner artwork in my story. Mmmm. I have pictures of the horses but Iknow that folks make postings all pretty and stuff.

I just sent you a PM. Reply if you want to touch base further; don't bother if you've already got the answers you need. No worries!

Thanks, I've looked at that before but it just confuses me. I'm gonna look again though!

I can help you! I'm not entirely clear on what you want to do. Do you want the whole text of your story in one LJ post with just separate LJ-cuts to the different chapters? You can do that, as long as the whole text is under about 10,000 words. (Though if you're posting in rich-text that word limit will be lower.) Or do you want a post that links to each of the chapters you've posted already? Either way is totally doable, and I'd be happy to walk you through it.

In general, I seriously recommend not using LJ's rich text editor for posting fic. I think it does nothing but cause problems and keep people from learning the wee bits of HTML needed to post fic without it.

I'm trying to do it with HTML because all of you smart folks say that is best. So far, I've been following brosedshield and chemm80 and I'm getting closer to what I want.

*deep breath*

*chants* I will figure this out. I think I can, I think I can.

You can! All the stuff you've had to learn for school--a little HTML is nothing. ;) But the offer stands if you want help.

Okay! *holds up hands nervously* This works for me, mostly, but sometimes the gap between explanation and logical understanding is bigger than anyone can be expected to overcome.

Method 1: You can use the Rich Text little world-with-a-chain icon (I think it's the same as your world linky icon?) to link to specific words other than actual addresses. So, example process:

Write "Chapter One"
Highlight "Chapter One"
Click the world-chain and copy/paste the desired address for Chapter One into the box.
Hit "Okay".
Now your actual Chapter One post should be linked to the words "Chapter One" in your Master Post.
Repeat as necessary.

Method 2: HTML. hyperlink

Example process is now:

Copy/paste code into your html section.
Where it says "link address" put your...link address, and where it says "Hyperlink" put in the text you want to be your link (e.i. "Chapter One")
Repeat as necessary.

Personal thought #1: Hope this works!
Thought #2: Sorry if some of my directions are simplistic (and also, if they fail to actually explain anything).

I agree with embroiderama:

Not only that, you can post much longer chapters if you post entirely in HTML, because a lot of word programs (particularly MS Word) have a lot of hidden embedded code that takes up space. In general, I can post about a 4500 word chapter in rich text, while an HTML chapter will usually allow somewhere in the neighborhood of 12,000 words.

Anyway, this page is pretty clear in explaining how to do it, and is where I learned a lot of what I know about HTML.

And I'm also not clear exactly what you're trying to do. If you're just trying to post links to posted chapters on one master post you can use this coding:

< a href, then = , then put your link, then close that with >, then put the title you want ( ... )

EEkkk. This is difficult. I suppose once I get it together I will understand. Hell, it took me three years how to do this I can write in italics now

Hee. Yeah, it just takes practice. At first I kept an index card next to my computer with all the tags I usually needed, but it's second nature now. We've all been there. I find that the older I get, the crankier I am about learning new things, especially piddly little things. I just want it to work, dammit!
