Posting questions

I'm almost finished my cowboy fic, but I have a question.  I know you guys know how to do this but I can't figure it out.  I want to have my whole story - all eight chapters on one post with cuts to each chapter.  You know labeled chapter one, chapter two.  What I usually do is make a link
like this: clicking on Rich Text's little world linky icon ( Read more... )

help, writing, peeps

I agree with embroiderama:

In general, I seriously recommend not using LJ's rich text editor for posting fic. I think it does nothing but cause problems and keep people from learning the wee bits of HTML needed to post fic without it.

Not only that, you can post much longer chapters if you post entirely in HTML, because a lot of word programs (particularly MS Word) have a lot of hidden embedded code that takes up space. In general, I can post about a 4500 word chapter in rich text, while an HTML chapter will usually allow somewhere in the neighborhood of 12,000 words.

Anyway, this page is pretty clear in explaining how to do it, and is where I learned a lot of what I know about HTML.

And I'm also not clear exactly what you're trying to do. If you're just trying to post links to posted chapters on one master post you can use this coding:

< a href, then = , then put your link, then close that with >, then put the title you want to show on your link, then < /a > with no spaces. (I can't show you the exact code because the comment box will code it and all you'll see is the title. If it's still not making sense, let me know and I'll send you an email.)

Good job on finishing some fic! Maybe I'll just hang around here and see if some of that industry will rub off on me...

EEkkk. This is difficult. I suppose once I get it together I will understand. Hell, it took me three years how to do this I can write in italics now

Hee. Yeah, it just takes practice. At first I kept an index card next to my computer with all the tags I usually needed, but it's second nature now. We've all been there. I find that the older I get, the crankier I am about learning new things, especially piddly little things. I just want it to work, dammit!
