As Long as I Have You

Clark almost couldn't contain his surprise - nay, shock - when Bruce pulled the piece of blue kryptonite out of a pouch on his belt. Just a small piece, no bigger than a shooter marble, but blue like cobalt and shining like a clear summer evening. His jaw falling open, he could only shake his head in disbelief.

"A-are you su--?"

"One hundred percent, Clark," Bruce cut him off, cradling the bright crystal in a black-gloved palm and bringing it nearer to the Kryptonian's chest. "Just lie still."

That he could do, his body weak from the blast of red solar radiation he'd taken straight to the torso. It had been an easy fight, another half-crazed, down on his luck scientist looking to make his mark by targeting the most powerful being he could. The usual for an otherwise slow Tuesday, really. Clark had drawn the guy away from any populated areas, and the League had even managed to drive a wedge between them, but not before the guy got off the shot. A spectacularly lucky shot, as it turned out.

And now Clark couldn't shake the feeling of dread as Bruce brought the piece of K closer, laying it gently on bare skin, exposed from beneath shredded uniform. Even knowing exactly what the blue crystal was supposed to do, the damage it was supposed to repair, the powers it was supposed to restore, Clark wasn't convinced.

But he trusted his Bat. He trusted Bruce.

Bruce wouldn't let him be hurt. Never in a million years.

Shoving aside the doubt, Clark watched his love's mouth quirk up at one corner, his eyes still hidden behind the white lenses of the cowl.

He trusted Bruce.

And in an instant he felt the pain of the blast easing, the weakness of his own heart giving way to strength. His body began to tingle with energy, like the Sun had come out and was bathing him in yellow light, sprinkled with crystalline blue. Cracked ribs repaired themselves, a cut lip healed over, leaving only a smear of blood as evidence. Breath became easier. Strength filled him.

Light. Healing. Love.

Bruce.

A few moments passed. Then a few more. And when Clark blinked his eyes open - when had he shut them? - his Bat was smiling down at him, the cowl pushed back and wolfish blue eyes shining from beneath mussed black hair. "Better?"

"Of course," Clark breathed with no hesitation. "As long as I have you, I'll always be better."
