I am wondering if there is a way to get the "expand" link in the linkbar on comments. It's there beside individual comments alright, but not beside the "reply", "thread" section in the first comment of a thread (the way it is on the default comments page ( Read more... )

You can't use a theme layer to modify the thread expander at all, because the compiler will strip out JavaScript from user's layers.

I don't want to modify what the expander does, just have the link to do it - it is not there in my layout's comment page, but is in the ordinary LJ comment page - underneath a comment beside the "(Reply to this) (Thread)" links.

It doesn't matter. The thread expander uses JavaScript, which is only allowed in "trusted" system layers. You can't do anything to change where it's located , add it someplace else, or what it does (except of course, disabling it) through theme layers. The only thing we can do is file a suggestion that the LJ design team make the expander more user-controllable somehow. Right now, we're stuck with the code where it is.

Oh okay. Thanks. :( I don't understand why it's in that place in the default comment page and not in my layout's page, but if I can't change it I can't.
